Fatigue analysis of random variable loads acting on wheels for special off-highway applications from experimental data
Vehicles for off-highway applications are often subjected to specific load conditions in service, which may affect the durability of critical components like wheels, tyres and suspension systems. In fact, during service operations, these components can be subjected to fatigue phenomena caused by cyclic loading of variable amplitude, which is difficult to assess in the product design phase. Experimental field tests can help to understand the real conditions in service. Devices like wheel force transducers or strain gauges can be used to improve the knowledge of the acting loads or the stress state of the components.

In this work, a special load condition for an off-highway wheel is investigated. The wheel is mounted on an agricultural tractor and the stress state in its critical points recorded by strain gauges, as experimental data. Two configurations are considered: the standard one, as single rear wheel, and a particular configuration as internal wheel in a dual wheel assembly (Figure 1).
First, the data recorded are analysed for the estimation of the fatigue damage both in time and frequency domain. Traditional tools like the rainflow counting method and the Miner’s rule are used for a simplified preliminary evaluation in the time domain, while the analysis in the frequency domain is conducted with different methods, comparing the results of the most used correction factors for wideband signals proposed in the technical literature. A good correspondence is found between the results of the analysis in the frequency domain and the one in the time domain, thus justifying the need of extending the study to different industrial applications and load cases, to confirm the validity of the frequency method used.
Then, a deeper analysis of the stress state of the component in dual wheel configuration is done. In fact, the strain data acquisitions show a remarkable increase of the stress on the wheel disc in that specific configuration, which is more than doubled (Figure 2).
Therefore, such load case can have a big impact on the fatigue life of the component and must be considered thoroughly, as the total number of working hours expected in this configuration in the lifetime of the vehicle is often unknown. For that reason, industrial test standards, currently used for the fatigue life validation of agricultural wheels, may result to be inappropriate for this specific application. Improved test parameters should be recalculated on the basis of additional strain acquisition campaigns in real service conditions.
