Application of nonlinear damage accumulation rules for predicting fatigue life of additivelly manufactured composites

Additively manufactured composites represent an interesting approach for designing structural components with graded material properties. Their layout can be designed and manufactured according to the required functionality of the structure. Moreover, the incremental manufacturing process makes them suitable for the incorporation of embedded sensors. One such combination of base materials is a composite with a bio-degradable PLA (polylactic acid) matrix and natural flax fibres as reinforcing building elements. In this research work, these composites are manufactured using the fused deposition modelling (FDM) technique. The specimens are designed as a combination of pure PLA filaments and PLA filaments with incorporated long flax fibres. The test specimens are subjected to block-wise loading with variable amplitudes and different loading sequences. To predict the fatigue life of specimens under variable amplitude loading, two nonlinear damage accumulation approaches (i.e. a double linear damage rule – DLDR and a nonlinear damage curve approach – NDCA) are compared to the conventional Palmgren-Miner linear damage accumulation rule.
