ABSTRACT
Extensometers are in use since decades. They are the basis for a precise and reproducible
strain measurement in mechanical tests. However, the temperature stability of extensometers
is often not considered sufficiently to minimize the error caused by temperature fluctuation.
This topic is not only discussed in Germany but also in the international materials testing
community. Data sheets of extensometers are partly incomplete especially concerning
temperature influences and for long term use. Strain errors due to temperature fluctuation
remain mostly unknown because the temperature at the extensometer is not measured. In this
paper, the main error sources concerning temperature stability are shown and analyzed.
Amendments are recommended for the extensometer users as well as for the extensometer
manufacturers. It is intended to implement tightened temperature tolerances of extensometers
and strain errors into strain-controlled materials fatigue testing standards.
