Loading spectra of the trailer chassis

Unlike in the development of passenger car, commercial vehicles or railway vehicles, in trailer development there is no general practice of using measurement-based design loads for fatigue assessments. This paper proposes a new method for generating design loads for trailer axles, that are based on measurements taken in real traffic conditions. These measurements are obtained using strain gauges placed directly in the most critical cross-section of the axle. There are analysed different trailer loads, two types of axle suspensions and various road reliefs like panel road, asphalt road, paving blocks and pavement. The obtained diagrams of variable amplitude loading in form of normal and shear stresses will be formalised for fatigue lifetime evaluation into design loads. The effects of…

The effects of important parameters such as load, road surface relief and suspension type on the obtained load spectra will be discussed. On the basis of those findings will be possible to enunciate some suggestions for industry.
