Abstract:

Damage mechanics is an important tool for representing complex material behavior and different geometries. Its greatest strength is that all conceivable stress states can be represented. This already works very well for ductile and brittle material behavior, but there are still no adequate solutions for temperature transition behavior of steels. The Charpy impact test is the simplest tool to estimate this transition behavior. However, it only represents a single stress state, which is not sufficient to fully represent temperature transition behavior. The simulation-based variation of the geometry of the Charpy impact test, gives us the possibility to adapt the stress state of the Charpy impact test to that of the component. The transition behavior simulation model used in this paper, in addition to stress and strain, also includes temperature in the evaluation of the fracture mechanism. This is necessary because the transition behavior is strongly dependent on the stress state.
