Preface

This bibliography is a chronological compilation of books about fatigue of materials
and components covering the time span from 1870 to 2005. 339 German, English,
French and Italian publications were collected, some of which also cover peripheral
areas, such as statistics in test evaluation.

The editors think that the knowledge of a subject’s history is the prerequisite of
successful education, research and application. This history is mainly represented in
reference books. Furthermore, it is to be mentioned that, regarding the exponential
rise of technical literature in the form of essays and lectures during the past decades,
especially books are indispensable for the orientation in a particular subject.

It is surprising in which way the focuses have changed in basics and application seen
chronologically and how early some cognitions considered to be modern ones were
first assumed or mentioned. On the other hand, early hypotheses, e.g. on the basics
of the fatigue of material, turned out to be wrong.

Some notions on the choice of the books: No technical reports, conference
proceedings, newsletters of companies or institutes, doctoral theses or technical
regulations were included. Not in all cases, however, a distinction between
proceedings and reference books by more than one editor could be made. Some
exceptions are the inclusion of several early ASTM STP’s because to the editors this
seemed to be of historical interest. The FKM guidelines “Rechnerischer
Festigkeitsnachweis für Maschinenbauteile” (“Analytical Strength Assessment of
Components in Mechanical Engineering”) and “Bruchmechanischer Festigkeitsnachweis”
(“Fracture Mechanics Proof of Strength for Engineering Components”)
were included because they give a comprehensive survey of this subject area. Due
to historical interest, some titles were quoted in more than one edition.

A compilation like this can never be completed. The editors are thankful for addenda
and corrections.*

We would be pleased if this bibliography were of advantage and benefit to its users.
