The FKM guideline “Analytical strength assessment” is a German guideline for static and fatigue assessments of components, which is also increasingly attracting international attention.
This contribution addresses the weaknesses of the FKM guideline when dealing with multi-axial stresses. It shows that
1. the result of the fatigue strength assessment with local stresses has so far been dependent on the coordinate system for the stress evaluationand
2. that the assessment shows considerable conservatism in the evaluation of non-proportional stresses. The reasons for this are explained and a proposal is made to improve both aspects. This proposal is based on scaled normal stresses according to Gaier and Dannbauer. As a result, the calculation…

This proposal is based on scaled normal stresses according to Gaier and Dannbauer. As a result, the calculation procedure of the FKM guideline becomes significantly more robust.
